I've been freelancing and working in the service industry for decades. As a service-based professional, I'm acutely aware of the value that testimonials have in building a business. They increase trust, conversions, lifetime value, and organic traffic. All good things.
Over the years, I realized that asking for a testimonial from a satisfied customer can be very nuanced. There were many things I could do to increase the quality and quantity of testimonials. But the most impactful thing I could do was reduce friction.
Even if your customer loved your work and would 100% endorse your work to others, you still may not get a testimonial from them. Because writing testimonials is work. It takes time and energy that most people just don't have regardless of how happy they are with your services.
I discovered the best way I could reduce the friction in the process was to simply write the testimonial on their behalf and ask for their approval to use it. This one thing alone increased my testimonials tenfold.
But even as a business owner yourself you may find yourself short on time or the writing skills to write these testimonials yourself. This is especially true if you already have a customer base and are playing catchup in the process. Perhaps you have a CRM of 200 satisfied customers. This will take time and tons of creativity to make each one original.
This was my case, and I realized there was an opportunity to automate this process. On top of that, with the recent developments in large language models in AI, it was a perfect use for creating testimonials. As a programmer myself, I began writing a program to automate the process. I needed to import all of my customers, profile them and the work that was done, create a unique and relevant testimonial for each, notify them and track its approval.
After the success I experienced in using this automated process myself, I developed it into software others could use too and named it Review Butler.
